Construction of Lavery Hall finished in 2012. Turner Place at Lavery Hall was designed specifically to meet students’ needs using feedback from surveys, a departmental student advisory committee, Table Talk Live programs in the campus dining centers, and collaboration with the Student Government Association.Â

430 Old Turner St.Lavery Hall, the Academic and Student Affairs Building that opened in fall 2012, includes two floors of dining in a facility called Turner Place, one floor of classrooms, and space for the .
The modern facility behind McBryde Hall on Old Turner Street offers a convenient dining location on the academic side of campus for students traveling between classes, faculty and staff members, and students commuting from off campus.
The new facility houses eight restaurants, including a wide variety of quick breakfast and lunch options. It features national brand franchises Jamba Juice, Qdoba, and Bruegger’s Bagels, and its menus emphasize convenient, healthy choices.
In addition to the franchises, Turner Place at Lavery Hall houses original concepts created by Dining Services. These venues include an Italian-inspired pizza and pasta restaurant; an upscale chophouse with a unique wood-burning grill; a Japanese-style steakhouse with four teppanyaki grills; a large grab-and-go venue offering prepackaged sandwiches and salads; an espresso bar; a gelato bar; and a crepe station.
The venue will seat 833 indoors and 244 at patio seating, including a large dining room for the . The cadets will use the dining room to support leadership training programs during weekday dinner meals.
The Services for Students with Disabilities office on the third floor of Lavery Hall provides accommodations that allow students with disabilities access to academic programs. Services include testing accommodations, note-taking, deaf and hard-of-hearing assistance, and other accommodations. Students must identify themselves to the office to be eligible to receive services.
In addition to the dining facilities and the Services for Students with Disabilities office, the new building holds six general assignment classrooms. Course offerings will vary by semester.
William E. Lavery
William E. Lavery joined the 17³Ô¹ÏÍø staff in 1966 as director of administration for the Extension Division. He served as vice president for finance; as executive vice president and was named the university's 12th president in fall 1974. During his tenure, two of the university’s signature facilities were developed: the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and the 17³Ô¹ÏÍø Corporate Research Center. He resigned as president of 17³Ô¹ÏÍø on Oct. 16, 1987, effective Dec. 31, 1987.Â
He was appointed honorary chancellor and named the Preston Professor of International Affairs, effective Jan. 1, 1988. He was appointed president emeritus upon his retirement on Aug. 1, 1991. He died in 2009.
